June 4th I hardly know how to commence where I left off so suddenly. I guess you will have to continue the subject. We had quite a fire here last night, this morning. Parsons & Steven's Tannery &c. loss some $1200, or 1500. They are pretty well able to bear it though; business very prosperous; boot & shoe, as well as leather. Some two or three thousand dollars worth of leather safe in the vats underneath the liquor, uninjured. I worked there some among fire & in water three or four hours till daylight. Not a dry thread on me when I got through. it of course did me good. Cousin Joseph got his face burned somewhat. Mother is here now, came out Friday, at Parsons & Steven's, with Uncle Joseph, on Commissioners' R. R. business. She is going over to Mrs. Dickinson's tomorrow, She appears to be enjoying herself much, What do you think of Lewis Cass for President U.S.? I wonder if "the Party" in Maine got it clear, bones all? Maine is a queer place: I do not know as it is entirely exactly beyond the "pale of Civilization"; a Little "behind the times". Both parties- why- our Mass. folks would hardly allow that you had any Whigs there. Gov Kent certainly not. And our Democrats cannot go Cass. they say the name is spelt wrong: C should be left off! We have some New York Democrats here- Barn burners. It would do you good to see their rage. Many of them would prefer to go for John Pitt Hale. Some for any body to defeat Cass. My friend Starr says any body but Cass or Sen. Foote! Wilmot Borise men you know have especial hatred to Cass as the meanest of renegades.
