Apr 1848 Dear Brother Joseph. I am constantly expecting a letter from you, Am tomorrow expecting to go to Brattleboro, for a few days. After my return & reception of your letter, shall probably write as soon as convenient. Just now having leisure moment, & happening to think of it, commence this. One thing - after despatching the letter to which your last of the 20th ult. was in reply. I addressed to you another containing a X.X. Fitchburg. You did not mention the receipt, perhaps it did not reach Bangor until you were gone to Mass, on your journey. It was probably mailed about March 9th. I should perhaps have mentioned it in my last. But it is probably all right somehow. I received a day or two since a letter from Sister Lucy, from which I learned that you were then at Milo. The letter contained also a note or two from you, written there. In answer to one question, I am the owner of a very respectable copy of "Vattel's Law of Nations,' by 'Chitty". a favorable specimen of the work as used for a Text Book at "Old Bowdoin." I was not intending to sell the Book: although it is rather a costly article; price some $4.00 I think) and is very saleable, at Brunswick at least: I could have sold that for more than it cost me. But I wanted to keep it. However, one Copy of the Work is full as much as you and I both are likely to need for the present: And - you are entirely welcome to the use of it - in fact, I am most happy to have you use it, - until I happen to want it; which, on present appearances, is likely to be not soon. You speak of some of my Books to be sold - You were unfortunate though in the Title you placed at the head of the list - "Hitchcock's Geology." That is a book I bought not because Alma Mater told me to, but because I wanted it. If sold, I should buy again as soon as I could get where it is. I thought it was in my trunk when I came here. and have wanted it twice its worth, but disliked to buy a duplicate, when I could get the first soon.
