several competent teachers from Mass. The higher branches taught their school lands being at the bottom of the lake, they depend upon their own efforts and consequently are prosperous. The state of society here is unsettled, restless, variable and shifting enough, settled as it is by a superior class of New Englanders to a great extent. Minnesota must be less preferable in every point of view. The land west to Mississippi is extremely fertile with great variety of surface - whereof enough varied in Wisconsin this year to supply the whole country with bread: - it is like a great garden so rich and favorable a soil for cultivation - one disadvantage not well timbered, valuable mines in the southwest;- plenty of water communication: flourishingly towns and villages are spiring up all around. A short time ago Milwaukee and Bangor were on a level, now probably Bangor has one third less inhabitants than the former. The school is very much a wrestle, we shall have an examination about Christmas: I have a class in French this term. My engagement lasts till next Aug. It is probable I shall not stay here after, for teachers enough are ready to step in who can instruct in Broaches in which I am deficient.
