Isaac. DuQuoin Jan 17, 1857 Elyria Ohio

DuQuoin Perry Co. Illinois Tuesday Eve. Jan. 17. 1857 My Dear Wife, Your letter of unclear 13th, last week Friday, came tonight. I am certainly lucky this week. Last week I believe I got but two letters, though I wrote five I think. This week I have received that number already. Yesterday yours of the 11th, and today of the 13th. Yesterdays troubled me some, with the pleasure of hearing from you, to think of your getting frightened about the fire. And today of your getting frightened again by the untimely caller. A big & cross watch dog would be an excellent thing about a house to induce such callers to satisfy their desire for information some where else. Perhaps though I should make a pretty good watch dog myself - Now I think of it I will try to come home and show my qualifications for the post. Your letter yesterday was a nice one, and one from Jennie too; but my letter last night I guess was only a scrawl. I only wrote a little while waiting for my supper for I was in a hurry unusually so last night.
