A previous Journal of his in the same Document, page 457, recites an address in which he attempted on the 20th of the preceding July, to persuade them to receive four millions five hundred thousand dollars in money, and five hundred thousand dollars in eight hundred thousand acres of land, as payment in full for their entire domain east and all their claims on the United States, --- but attempted without obtaining even a reply. On the second failure in December, the commissioner says that "in order to meet and get rid of the difficulty" [arising from his attempt to include other claims beside that for the country in his offer of the five millions] "he agreed to refer the matter again to the Senate", and was answered, in substance, that such a course would be superfluous, "as the language of the Senate." resolution, rendered it plain that those claims had not been taken into consideration." A reference to certain Senators was nevertheless, made on the 29th of February, 1836 (see the same document, page 531), and they certified that the five millions was intended to be offered to the Cherokees "as the price of their territory" and not to include
