"In 1779, the combined forces of North Carolina & Virginia, marched against the Indian towns. They came on the Indians by surprise and they: (the Indians) "fled without giving battle. The soldiers pursued them, burned their villages & destroyed their crops. This was about the time General Clark took Vincennes. These co-incident events restored peace for a time in the western settlements. During this interval of repose, the territory rapidly increased in population, and the Indians were never after able to break up the settlements. Another county was constituted by the name of Sullivan. In the meantime the Cherokees continued to harrass our borders, and the settlers were compelled to act with great energy & firmness, as well to resist the savages, as the British, who were then scouring the southern frontier."
