136 1776 "not long afterwards Col: Christian, from Virginia, with about 1800 men, marched into the heart of the Cherokee nation. They found no Indians till they came to a town called Tamotlee. They then marched to the Great Island town, and tarried there near twenty days; in that time the Indians made overtures for peace, which was granted, but not to take place until the month of May following. Hostilities were to cease in the meantime on both sides, except as to two towns on the Tenessee which had burnt a prisoner. The excepted towns were burned & the army returned to quarters." Tenn: Gaz:
