"In February they (the exploring party mentioned under 1768) "crossed the North Fork of Holston, and proceeded on until they came to Big Creek, now in the county of Hawkins, where they discovered the hunting grounds of a party of Indians. They turned about and went up the river ten or fifteen miles, and concluded to return home. They found on their return that the country which had so recently been a wilderness, was full of inhabitants; there was a cabin on every spot where the range was good."
