"M. D'Abbadie, as director general & commandant of Louisiana, is instructed to give up to the officers of Spain the country & colony of Louisiana, together with the city of New Orleans, and all the military posts of the ceded country. The English take possession of Florida, pursuant to the treaty of the year preceding. A regiment on its way up the Mississippi to Natchez, is entirely defeated by the Tunicas at the heights now called Loftus, in commemoration of Major Loftus who fell in that action. St. Louis is founded by Pierre Laclade, Maxan & Company, a trading association." Lings C. 94
