"While the" [English] "troops were conquering Canada, the Cherokees" "were committing outrages on the frontiers of Virginia & Carolina. Governor Lyttleton of South Carolina, with a body of colonial troops, entered the country & obliged the Indians to sue for peace, which was granted. But the savages violated the treaty & attempted to surprise a fort on the frontiers of Carolina. Gen: Amherst, on application, sent Col: Montgomery, with twelve hundred troops, to protect the southern colonies. This officer penetrated into the heart of the Cherokee country, plundering & destroying all the villages & magazines of corn. In revenge, the savages besieged fort Loudon, on the confines of Virginia; the garrison, after being reduced to extreme distress, capitulated; but on their march towards Carolina, a body of savages fell upon the party and murdered five & twenty of them, with all the officers, except Captain Stuart."
