My Dear Son,

Have this afternoon rec'd your letter Dated Oct 3rd Had just sent off one to you only the day before. I thought of waiting till I had another from you & now wish I had. Should not write again not but that you say you are Politics this fall and I want a little of your help am very glad of your letter to C. wish you would send on more such. He is determin'd to vote for Taylor. All I can do is to entreat him not to for I dont know enough to argy the case with him. He says tis evident that Cass or Taylor will be President - that Taylor is a good & will do right and he dont feel justified in throwing his vote away by voting for Van Buren or helping Cass ever so little by not voting for Taylor. If it was between Cass & Van Buren Should vote for the latter. That he is Free Soil but thinks that is the way to obtain it.
You say Joseph A. is a good fellow I think so I had got an impression I cant think how or which way that he was very Shrewd and that he was a little inclin'd to be overreaching in his dealing (I have not been much acquainted with him you know) But when I look in his face - tho' he is evidently Shrew'd as well as cunning Sensible Smart, & inteligent I can see I think entire Truthfulness and Sincerity which makes me love him dearly. I do love him and his Jane nobody more with whom I have been so little acquainted.
