written at the top: to have bought a Serer (?) it is the watch a gentleman ought to have, every one nowadays Morover this will do if I am careful of it I think I must give A to Lucy sometime.

Turner, Sept 7th, 1845 Dear Mother Here I am, safely ensconced at my new boarding place, trying to realise the idea that it is my home. I arrived here Friday night, and shall commence my school tomorrow, Monday Morning. I suppose you will want to hear the whole story, as usual. In the first place, then; Our Yearly Examination, was on Wed. Aug. 27th at which time I was almost sick, having a very bad cold, and having been out a good deal the two nights before, being the Prize Declamations at the Junior & Sophomore Exhibitions. It was a very cold rainy day, We were obliged to sit in the Old Chemical Lecture room, hardest seats in the world most, for 8 or 9 hours two hours and more at a time without moving. I felt bad enough, I assure you: It was a much harder Examination than usual besides. However I got along through the Latin and Greek and French, very well indeed, much better than I expected in comparison with this, and considering the peculiar 'state of my feelings' at the time. But in the Mathematics - O Tempora! O Mores! or any thing else! How I did get screwed! I had expected to show to advantage in Mathematics, if nothing else. I believe I am considered one of the best Mathematicians in the Class, I have certainly studied the Mathematics of the year as thoroughly and understandingly as any one of the class. But at that time the violence of my head ache totally incapacitated me for thinking. Old Smyth (probably relying upon my ability) gave me a kind of theoretical demonstration from the Spring term studies; I had not thought of it recently, At an other time I could have thought it out, but there, I could form no idea of it; and was obliged to get something else assigned to me which I performed.
