94 the Maj. was not willing to undertake the charge, unless he might have some of the Chrn. Inds. upon Deer Id. to go with him for guides, etc, for the Maj. being an experiencd. sold. well considd. the great necessity of such helps in such an undertaking, the genl. court consentd. to this reasonable motion of Maj. Savage, & accordingly ordered that one John Curtis of Roxbury ( who was well acqd. with those Inds.) Shd. go down to Deer Isld. & choose out 6 of the fittest men for that service, which he did, & chose & bro't up with him 6 men whose names were James Quanapohit, Job Kattenanit ( those were the 2 Spies before mentioned) James Speen, Andrew Pitimee, John Magus, William Nahaton. These were all principl. men, faithful & courageous, they were all willing & cheerful & joyful that they had this call & opportunity to serve the Eng. under Maj. Savage whome some of them had served under in the beginning of the war at Mount Hope. These 6 men being fitted & furnished with arms & other necessaries, they were conducted to Marlbo. frm. whence the army was to march the first day of March, 1675-6. But before the army set forth from Marlboro there fell out a matter of trouble & disquiet to them, (1) occasioned by the motion of one of the caps.
