left margin: Dec. 12. Sam Jones, and all the others, were coming on; but Jumper's messenger had overtook them at Foul Creek, and had requested Tarskeekee and others to wait for him till he overtook them, that they might go on to Fort Mellon together; and Tarskeekee and others had waited for him, and Tarskeekee now had sent him to tell Gen: Jessup that they could not get in at the appointed time; and Jumper also had sent to Gen: Jessup, for Gen: Jessup to send him a horse to ride, for Gen: Jessup knew he (Jumper) was a sickly man. I then told those people we had waited/stopped (?) to go to Fort Mellon that night; if they could not get in that night, to get in the next day, as early as possible. They agreed to it. We then in company with the messenger went into the fort that night. I then gave Gen: Jessup the whole history of our trip and Tarskeekee's messenger also told him his story. Gen: Jessup agreed to send a horse to Jumper by the messenger. I then told Col: Sherburne, that if Genl Jessup would give Tarskeekee and Sam Jones three days more to come in, which was Cloud's day, that me & the Pole Cat would go with the messenger that night. The General consented. Mr Fields joined us. We went about thirty miles that night. left margin: " 13. On the 13th we proceeded on. About 12 o'clock, we reached the place where the messenger said Tarskeekee & others had [promised to be]. Here, for the first time, the messenger told us that he had told a falsehood. He said, It was said that Wild Cat was spoiling in making of this treaty of peace. He said, it was true. He said, the people had said that they would never submit to the demands of Genl Jessup, as a preliminary to a Treaty; for he only wanted to get them to Fort Mellon, then to take them & put them in the Fort at St Augustine.
