Saturday May 7- Wrote long letter to cousin L. Pond and mailed it - Sent her Painted cup and Anemone. Sent Spring beauty - Dutchman's B - ((unclear)) Emil and Jenny in last letters - Isaac home before dinner - Harriet Smith here all P.M. made ((unclear)) book. I looked through telescope off five miles on prairie saw cattle, houses, sheep about the houses - people in the doors, Everything in Nautre liiks now fresh & bright - as if no blight ever came - as if there were no time to die - But oh how soon these glorious things must wither & die! Even now is the work begun - Sweet flowers fresh & fragrant - one week agone now bloom no more - They have lived their little hour and passed away - frail fading emblems of our fleeting life! What a lesson ye teach.
