There had been no account of our Convoy. There are anchored in Lasacrificios unclear the Cameleon, another British Vessel of War (a Cutter whose name I forgot) which had brough out the British Counsel General, a French Brig of War, and an English Merchant Ship. -- The Capt. and Campbell went ashore to see Wm. Neale acting British Counsel at Vera Cruz and the only foreigner then in the place, who confirmed what we had already heard of the necessity of our proceeding to Alvarado where all business was transacted. -- The City of Vera Cruz has suffered a severe bombardment from the Castle which had demolished many of its buildings and injured almost all of them. -- The appearance of the City from the water is beautiful it appears one continued mass of domes & spires. -- The Castle is situated about a mile off on an island which it almost entirely occupies. -- The Patriots have a fort at Point Mocambo in front of the island of Lasacrificios, and a boat put off from it manned by people who appeared to be Indians, and we were boarded by the officer who noted the vessel's name and the Port of her Procedance, with the names of the Captain, passengers &c. He was highly amused at out not being able to answer any
