Cape Mongow in St. Domingo in the forenoon distant about 3 miles; the land seemed very high and is seen a great way off. -- Passed the Island of Beata distant about 10 miles; -- it appears to be a broken rock, and at 4 P.M. the island or isolated rock of Altavela distant about 3 miles, the Island of St. Domingo all the while in the distance. -- Immence flocks of birds called by the sailors "boobies" almost sufficient to darken the air, -- unclear part Sto. Domingo in the evening. -- Saturday 8th Hove in sight of Jamaica in the forenoon. -- A pilot boast came off about 3 o'clock with 6 negroes, -- and hailed us if we wanted a pilot; on being answered in the affirmative they hoisted out their Canoe, & three of them got into it and paddled towards us with amazing swiftness. -- The Canoe is made out of the trunk of a tree hollowed out about two feet wide and 15 or 16 feet in length. -- The negroes were almost naked, their only dress being a coarse woolen shirtt of the stuff used at home for horsecloths, -- one or other of them wore wide cotton drawers. We got one of them on board, and gave the others in consequence of their clamours, a piece of
