5 P.M. Caught trout for supper Distance 29 miles Saturday Sept 6 ~1879 I think I am now well out of the mountains. along this creek the marshes or low praries alternate with thick evergreen forests, and from information recd before leaving Missoula, I am of the opinion that there will be no more mountains to contend with, and that I will soon be upon a wagon or stage road running from Orofino to Lewiston at the Junction of the Clear Water & Snake Rivers. I left camp at about 8 oclock and had a good trail along a southerly branch of Muscle Creek, crossing a low timbered summit praries and timber alternating and at 20 miles, I saw a house about 2 miles to the right across level prarie land, and striking off in that direction I found the same to be on the Orofino stage road - Here I camped at 2 P.M. - Killed a couple of Deer and some birds today - Distance 20 miles Sunday Sept 7 ~1879 Lay in camp - Caught Trout & c? Monday Sept 8 ~1879 Set out this morning for Lewiston over a very gently rolling stick timbered Country for about 6 miles. Then through a more open country to the high bluffs of the Clear water - where the road descends by a tortuous and steep meete? about 3 miles to the Clear Water River, of about 100 yds wide which is crossed by a Ferry.
