Capt of the company and offered me the first lieutenancy in the company and I proceeded at once to Salem the capitol of the state and the general rendevous sic of the troops. This was about the last of February 1865.and on the 14th March I was summoned before the same examining board, as Capt. Appelgate having declined the appointment, was examined and accepted only one question being asked and that a mathematical problem in writing in which the following is a copy:
"If a soldier is allowed 1/7 of a cord of wood per week with 1/3 added, N. of Lat. 42 (sign for degrees) N.What would 10 soldiers be entitled to in 11 3/4 days."
I thought I had had been accustomed tobisimifs? for some time past, yet this was a stumper and it was some time before I succeeded in producing the correct result.
