Altho' to our ideas, the Indians live in a state little superior to the brute creation, we ought to consider that they know no want of anything better, and have always been accustomed to live in a state of nature. Their necessities are few or none and with a little strikeout: pound pinole, they are as contented and happy as the greatest epicure can be with the most delicious Viands, and when they get in addition some brandy or other spirituous or fermented liquors, strikeout: they of which all Indians are excessively fond, they are as happy as human beings can be. -- Pinote is made from wheat or maize which is toasted
