Set out and soon came to Little Black Foot and follow it down crossing it two or more times and Camp at the mouth of Deer Lodge Creek - Distance 25 miles

Tuesday Aug 26 1879 Down the River by the usual road 20 miles to New Chicago of about a Dozen houses, thru? 1/2 Junction to Flint Creek, passing the valley of said Creek and ascend the Flint Creek hills and camp at the springs on unclear - 28miles

Wednesday August 27 1879 Descend from this camp and follow down a little branch to the Little Black Foot again and at 14 miles come to Toll Bridge where we cross to the North side, thence down by the usual road fording the same 4 times and camp at 3 P.M. at a small prarie on right hand side of road, 18 miles above Missoula Distance 32 miles

Thursday August 28 1879 Forepart of the night was bright and clear it then clouded up and was followed by much thunder and lightning, and towards morning it commenced raining - I went to bed as usual with tent folded and spread on top of blankets, but by the fast coming thunder & lightning I was admonished of the uncertainty of the situation, so I got up and put up my tent in a temporary manner, only to have it fall down when it commenced raining however I secured myself and baggage from Getting wet - It is still raining hard this morning - Horses in sight close by, at about 8 oclock it slacked up and looking fair
