Journal Continued May 26 here also we found persons pretending to do and order every thing on their own etc. but when we found the right man matters were done very satisfactory and I would recommend every man who travails this rout if things does not go right, to apply to Mr.? Adams the managing unclear of Hannibal & St. Jo. Road and he will at once set matters right in all my travails in Europe or America. I never found a more Gentlemanly and Efficient Manager, doing all in his power to Serve the Company and give Satisfaction to travelers I must not forget the man who superintended the Loading of our? car, and the conductor. Hannibal is a city of about the size of Quincy. the RR seems to do quite a large business at this time. I think the city trade is dul? judging from what we saw some of the best unclear block in the City was burnt? down totily giving a dilapidated appearance to the City. from the Hill on the S.W Side of the place a fine panoramik view of the City is had. the Hill is some 200 feet above the floor? of the RR Depot below. Illinois from this point appears woody. We can see the bluffs in the eighth? Burlington unclear consequently we view three states at a glance. having all our matters on board the Cars we started out at 4 o'clock P.M. for St. Jo. after passing a few miles West of Palmyra we entered on some of the most splendid dry prairie I ever saw altho the crops through the whole route are miserable in consequence of the Drought they say that no Rain has fallen for some? 5 months and the land in the neighberhood of Hannibal is litterally parched and seems as if all life was suspended. We could not get a bale of hay
