here a few years ago by an energetic Boiseite upon the promise that a law should be framed for their protection, which was accordingly done. Boise City was settled during the great mining excitement of 1862&3. upon a level sage plain as the North side of the Boise River. nicely lain out & looks like a thrifty locality. Supplies are furnished here from Kelton as the C.P.R.R. by teams a distance of about 300 miles. The stages from Salt Lake, Nevada, Idaho & Oregon, make this a central point, and here is where the miners of a large District of Country obtain their supplies. A Military Post on the northern outskirts of town adds to its importance and beauty. Distance 20 miles. Thursday July 17 - 1879 Remained at Boise, answering letters etc Friday July 18 - 1879 Set out this morning Eastward upon the Stage road leading towards Salt Lake - passing along through the Sage valley about 8 miles to where the same terminates in a Canyon. Follow up the Canyon 2 miles and the road crosses over to the South side on a Toll Bridge. The River is about 75 yds wide, muddy water and swift current. Leave the River at this point and follow more southerly up a willow brand about 6 miles, thence over a summit about 2 miles and camp in a willow gulch with a few springs of poor water just above the road. Distance traveled 16 miles. Rabbits. Sage. hens & chickens seem to abound. Black crickets are found here in immense numbers. So much so that it appears impossible to do anything, move or step without coming in contact with them by hundreds. Distance 18 miles.
