The one named John Tohatooner & the other crossed out Conamog both pious men & rulers of the pray Inds. one at Marlboro the other at Nashobah her last husband died before the war the first long before: this youth slain was only son to the first husband, (1) his grandfather old Tahattawarre* was a sachem & a pious man: god was pleased to restrain the other 12 Eng. men that they did not fire yr guns upon the poor Inds. that which was done was too much, & was an action very much decried by all wise & prudent men, especially by the magistrates & ministry; as soon as this intelligence came to the authority, warrants were sent forth to apprehend the murderers; their names were Lorgin & Robins: They were seized & committed to prison, & afterwards tried for their lives & clead. by the jury, to the great grief & trouble generally of magistraye and ministry, & otherwise & godly men the jury pretended want of clear evidence, but some feard. it was neither a mist of temptation & predjudice agst. these poor Inds. that darkd. their way. This cruel murder & fright occasioned most of those poor christn. Inds. to fly away from their wigwams not long after, but carried little or nothing with them, but for fear rather expose thenselves & famiies to the hardships & sufferings of hunger & cold then to be under the harsh dealings of cruel men but as soon as the council were informed that the Inds. were fled they sent orders to Lieut. Henchn. to send after them & endeavor to persuaide them to return but their
