from home till Sept 5th, reaching Bangor Sat. morn Sept 6th by steamboat. If I could only go a week earlier, I presume I should find Charles' haying unfinished. Harvest seems hardly worth the while to go home so far, just for is short a term as three weeks, the vacation after Commencement, but then if I had nothing to do to earn any thing here, it would cost me more to stay here than to go home, even if I could do nothing there. I have written to Mr Task, had a letter from him & answered it. He wanted me to come there this fall, but could not afford to pay much. I suppose it might be perhaps some advantage to him, or the school, to have me there, I gathered from his letter that he thought his assistance for a few terms had not been very popular. It seemed he would not have a great deal for me to do, and could not afford to pay a great deal. I concluded that it would not be best for me to play out of college without I could earn something worth the while something to help along next year as well as pay my fall bills. You see that 12 or 15 dollars of my fall term bill would be called for whether or not I was here, in fact biggest part of the expense except my board would be just the same: and board I could probably earn here, at least I have and mine too for the two terms past. I have therefore concluded to be here a while the full term, at the beginning and long enough to get started in the German, which I want to study thoroughly It will be better for me to borrow the money and do it. If I could bring back $20,00 I could get along very well, though I don't see best I must have a new coat, By the way, I need dreadfully to have it before commencement if I stay here. I have a great mind to go right to Nicholas and have a first rate one just such as I need made to order and trust providence to get money to pay it when I come back. Get one for 11,12 or 15 dolls. My dress now is not really decent. I must, at some rate, dress better the coming year. It will be better for me in many respects.
