thick = one of our Party Mr Jackson had his boots stolen in the night by wolves = he found one again which they had dropped = his bridle & sircingle were torn in peices = & this without awakening him & his boots were so near he could put his hands on them = 29th started early about sunrise = soil some better. travelled south along a ridge of mountains = through sage bushes as usual = walked most of the way = 16 miles to "Warm Springs" stopped to noon in the afternoon travelled 12 or 16 miles to "Mound Springs" called so from springs on the top of 2 or 3 small mounds. a party travelling in company with us stopped at Warm Springs to rest their horses = in the night our mules started back to join them we succeeded in stopping all but 3 which delayed us half a day to recover them = 30th we occasionally see an antelope again caught sight of an Indian in the distance = & see numerous signal smokes on the mountains = there must be many bands of them Judging by the signs & smokes Our former Guide Mr Kinney said "if you meet any Snake Indians, shoot them at sight , they are not fit to live" we are now among them. in the afternoon
