Bangor Dec. 30th 1846. Dear Brother I wish you a happy new year!- Although the old year still lingers on the footsteps of steady old time; yet eve this reaches you, it will have vanished;_ receded from our view, but not into oblivion;- it will have taken its place in the imperishable past! Solemn thought! that all that has been, exists, and will, forever. All our main thoughts, trifling imaginations,- secret,- perhaps, untidy purposes, and indelibly impressed on the tablets of memory and though forgotten long, will one day brighten into view as if written with a pencil of light. Your last letter came duly to hand, it as very acceptable and though longer delayed than your answered usually are, I have no right to complain. Mother received a good letter from you while I was at home at Thanksgiving & in her letter yo us a few days since, she mentioned having heard from you and of your journey of which I should like to have an account soon from you.
