graze & get some supper. we had put our fish in an india Rubber stocking & we found them spoiled or cooked by the hot sun as if they had been boiled = after supper started we travelled until about 10 oclock = evening warm = turned off the trail up a dark ravine = & camped for the night = woke up about midnight animals quiet = & then slept soundly until morning 7th Breakfasted on hard Bread Bacon & Tea soon after started upon riding over a ridge saw the salt lake in the distance & two or more rocky Islands. the air in the valley seems very clear, & the city could be very plainly seen seemingly near but in fact quite a number of miles distant. travelled fast & reached the camp of our company on the south of the city about 10 oclock,, some Mormons came into camp, treated us very friendly = & appeared very intelligent men, they will sell us flour at $10 pr 100 lbs wheat $3 45 pr Bushel milk pr qt 5c Bacon 10c clothing St Louis prices = horses $150,, mules $100 to $200 = shoeing mules $1 pr foot = Guns & Waggons = of no value. Horses, Cattle, Sheeps, Hogs, Hens, & good fields of wheat = corn & all sorts of garden vegetables = they however depend on irrigation they have ditches into which they turn the mountain streams that come from the East & the ground thouroughly watered as often as the plant or crops require it. Dr Briggs = Mr Philips = & 4 or 5 others with myself took Dinner at Bishop Crosbys we had roast beef = boiled pork = Biscuit & butter = green peas = Green beans = cucumbers = onions = butter milk = etc etc we did ample justice to the different articles = & some of our party seemed to think the mormons could set as good a table as we could = after dinner took a stroll in the Bishops garden saw very nice Rutabagas = Tomatoes = Melons - Corn - Peas - Beans etc = The mormons think they have been hard used = their laws are very strict = a Theif they make restore 4 fold the amount stolen, besides a fine which goes to the society & also give him up to the owner of the property stolen to be dealt with as he thinks best - they have a Council
