our path & went into it to allow us to pass, as I rode opposite to them one of the indians, pretending to throw the blanket over his shoulders (in doing so) frited? it in my horses face, making him shy almost over the edge of the precipice, I turned my horse towards him & spoke very sharply = & he went off from the track, = they had a number of good horses = the women carried their Papooses lashed to straight peices of wood = with willow twigs bent over the childs head so as to form a roof or shade = several ^ Indians followed us some distance = one fired off his gun & called out to some others of his party across the ravine "Sacre God-dam = Americanos = shoot" = soon after as we journeyed on = upon going round a point of the mountain = we saw to the southwest the Eutaw lake spread out in the valley before us, it reminded me of our own Owaseu? but how far distant = Way worn & weary = almost out of provisions = & the worst part of the journey yet before us = one mule gave out today = after emerging into the Eutau valley we turned to the north & after travelling 5 or 6 miles camped near two small runs on the east side of the valley = wild sage for wood = 6th Packed my mules Mr Mead took charge of them, & Col Whiting & myself concluded to visit the lake & fish in its waters. we rode 4 miles to the lake, we found nothing on its shores to make a raft = so we caught some grasshoppers stripped = waded out to our necks in the water & fished we caught several fish resembling lake herring & about the size = killed a snipe = a young ^ woman came up on horseback. Said they were beginning to harvest & that we could probably get a supply of provisions = that thousands of migrants had passed through, & were leaving their waggons & buying Pack mules. he asked if the Eutau Indians had troubled us - said they (the mormons) killed 4 near here last winter for stealing, = said there was plenty of fish in the lake & in the streams very nice trout,, that sometimes the suckers were so plenty they tied hooks on to poles & hooked them out = we cooked some of our fish = and about 3 Oclock started back on the trail of the company = the sun was very hot = we travelled 8 or 9 miles & then stopped to let our horses
