2 and Halsted Sts & from there to J.R. unclear office on Halsted St viaduct to get a pass for Cooke but were unsuccessful, they went from there to the Union Depot, going into three or four saloons on the way & meeting Jake Watters and Frank Hayner, two C&N.W. engineers in the saloon on cor. of Adams & Halsted Sts, & in the course of their conversations they both expressed a desire to pay $10.00 a month if necessary to keep the boys together in the strike. They left the Union Depot on a train of P.F.W.&C. empty coaches and got off at 14th St. and went to Noonan Bros. where they met a number of the boys. During the whole day Opr. learned nothing new although he has talked to every one of the above mentioned men, they all say the boys will all stay out as long as the $40.00 per month is coming in and say there is no danger of the St. Louis meeting having any effect on this payment, still they act as though they wished they had a sure thing of it, and in talking the matter over among them selves they seem to be afraid to speak out what they think for fear someone will think they show a weakness They all seem sure of success if they all hod out and while there is no
