[Newspaper clipping] GATHERED TO HIS FATHERS - The familiar form and jovial countenance of Dr. E. R. Fiske will no more be seen on the streets of earth. Last Monday night at 10 o'clock the good man passed from his home here to that 'home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.' Dr. Fiske has been quite feeble for many months, and his most intimate friends knew that his death was liable at any time, but many of his acquaintances will be surprised at his sudden decease. He was confined to his room but a few days. - [Italics: Statesman.]

  The Dr. was formerly a resident of this city and county where he leaves many old friends.

On [obscured text] Dr. E. R. Fiske an old [Oreg... obscured text] the Capital of the State Dr [obscured text] Umpqua River in 1850 in [obscured text] "Samuel Roberts" . private [?] [obscured text] California for the settlement and [obscured text] valleys of southern Oregon

  An organized company under the name of "Winchester Paine & Co." came in the aforesaid vessel and attempted to do considerable for southern Oregon - they bargained for a part interest in Scottsburg, which had just been located by Capt Levi Scott . surveyed off townsides as Umpqua City . Gardner . Elkton at the mouth of Elk Creek 20 miles above Scottsburg . and Winchester, a point on the trail from Oregon to California where the same crosses the North Umpqua River . and for a brief period attracted considerable attention to this part of Oregon - Umpqua City - & Elkton failed entirely as towns - Winchester grew into considerable importance became the County seat of Douglas County . but was afterwards entirely abandoned . and all the buildings torn down & moved away - Gardner is now a brisk little place
  For want of means or some other cause "Winchester Paine & co" dissolved . or full [sic] to pieces and part of the Company returned to California and a portion remained and took part in the early settlement of the Umpqua Vally . and among them was Dr Fiske . who was the first man of that profession resident of Southern Oregon - He it was who attended upon me during my long and tedious sufferings from Indians arrow wounds received in Sept 1851 - He remained in the Umpqua Vally until about 1862 when he removed to Salem where he has since resided - In former years he was some what reckless and dissipated . but for the last 10 or 12 years has lived an upright & consistent Christian life
