Mother says so much about writing long pieces, that I abridge greatly of late. Do you ever see anything of Miss Carter nowadays? I sent a paper to her the other day,- also recieved one from N.E. Carpenter. Very much obliged for the Farmers which you sent. E. sent them all to Massachusetts.
June 7th Mr. Gilman came here to work last Monday. The work on the house progresses finely. C. works most of the time with Mr. G. and Eliab takes charge of the farming operations. John Dolin is helping him plant potatoes yesterday & today. E. washed the sheep all alone, one day this week. He is a real smart boy to work. I am afraid he will work too hard this summer. The report about here is that there will be a mob in Bangor fourth of July, to injure the Irish people as much as possible. I think there ought to be a great duty on Irish Emigrants, to prevent so many from flocking into this country. Angella Bennett commenced teaching the school at Milo village last Monday. I suppose I might have had it just as well, only Mother was afraid. I had a paper from Miss Tash this week, wherein she said she should write soon. You did not write whether there were any "pretty girls" there as Clark says. By the way, did'nt he rebuke you for your audacity in showing his letter? I wish you would write particularly all about your situation, studies, joys & sorrows, pleasures & afflictions, who attends school etc. etc. We want to hear all. E. Barker concluded not to have his leg taken off, - or the doctors concluded not to have him, rather. Nine M.D.'s met together to consult about it the other day. He says he will have it off, if he has to go to Boston for it. Very resolute. Smart fellow, I says; Congregationalist & Baptist Conference united, at the Mills tomorrow; I think of going down to stay till Sunday. Mr. Hackett is not coming here; and we shall be almost entirely without preaching this summer excepting good friend Wilkins charity. I say charity - for he says he has never recieved a dollar of money for his preaching here, except what Charles paid him these dollars.
