morning of the 5th, on the second day out we passed over the battle ground of Champion Hills, where the heaviest fighting was done under Gen. Osterhaus (this was our own right, Smiths was on the left). Here for nearly a mile the under brush is deadened by Infantry Canistor and Grape Shot, limbs sent from trees in every direction Oak trees two feet in diameter splintered the ball passing clean through. Mounds of fresh dirt dot the ground in every direction. Some of them are marked ten or fifteen men from Ky. - others have no marks, which are the rebels.
