had been following our trail they expressed a wish to travel with us as we had a guide & they would pay part of his expenses. July 6th raised camp about 10 Oclock crossed ^ in the forenoon some large stream. in the unclear mule lost his foothold, & was reached down quite a distance. To all appearances ^ dead, but when rescued was found alive, travelled today until late at night as we did not find any water at night until about 10 oclock. we could only keep our party from getting separated in the darkness by the advance guard firing minute guns,, until we reached camp. we were guided entirely by the flash & report, as soon as my mules were cared for feeling tired & unwell I went to bed supperless. but nevertheless took my turn on guard from 2 'till 4 - July 7th
