14 Journal across the plains in 1859 Four o'clock p.m. we are tied up to an island covered with timber and also covered with water with a gale of wind blowing, probably 5 miles to land in any direction All crowed into a little cabin with only standing room with no chance to get any thing to eat and no show? to sleep. Our cattle had to be watched all night by a man on deck with a long pole to keep them from laying down and getting killed. Snowed some in the night, but in spite of all there was some fun and music but a bitter feeling was shown against the crew for getting us on board to keep us from taking another and better boat traveled 9 miles by land and water.
