J.M. Metcalf Esq.

I did propose to see you last Week, but was prevented by a press of surveying I earned. Mr. Hathorne in twelve days surveying $51, before I hired with him Mr. Brown tho't I was not competent enough to survey. it is all working just right, The Senator is now loading with dust. Hathorne expects to contract so as keep her at the dust business. Gunnings bill is about $800, he calls her good for ten years service, all that has been done pretty nearly amounts to new taking she now stand the owners of $1860, with some interest, the Brandywine is doing a poor business. got a return from the ashes to day they fell short in Portsmouth of the measure some 450 Bushels. Thurston & I lose about $4, each instead of a profit of $20, each which we should have realized if the cargo had held out. the quakers even too big rogues for Jellison. The Feltcher and Mayo matters remain in "Status quo." Have pd Whiting, shall pay McDonnald when he asks for it; Eliab gave me a meas. of all amts which you left with him for collection I suppose he is too busy to look after them this Fall. I suppose it to be perfectly useless to write to any of your Creditors, perhaps by following them up close something might be collected but think it doubtful, if there is nothing, any sooner perhaps next winter I can look after some of them. If Charles' creditor of Leaven does not want his money at present perhaps I should like to keep it a few weeks and would pay the rate which he pays. Can I keep it if I wish? please.
                                                                                                                                                   S.W.F.

[left-hand side] Mr. Goddard went blackberrying, as I told you, fourteen miles - got 4 qts - cost him $3.50! Horse & carriage & lots of days time. Profitable, wasn't it? Shall I send the cloth and things up by stage or wait for another opportunity - will ask Mrs. Lee to take that for the S. Circle if she comes here, but suppose she would not want to carry all. [top] enough to get some things. Just saw Eliab last night - hardly spoke to him. Well, I must write to Isaac tonight so I'll leave you all for the present, good night. I have forgotten whether Almeda wished her bag filled with coarse meal to send or not.
