all the distance at intervals of perhaps three hundred yards are shrines dedicated to the Virgin of Guadeloupe - & in years past, the people who wanted to do some partial as pennance, have gone on hands & knees from the City to the old Church on the Hill (Stopping at every shrine to pray) The Old Church owing it origin to this - so was the story - an old Padre living at this village below the Hill
