Apl 3rd Tuesday. day passed as usual. the canal is situated on the Banks of the Juniatta & frequently the bed of the river is used as a canal, about noon passed some curious shaped rocks one resembling a church steeple, another a miniature Chinese ball? some 20 ft high 2 or 3 ft thick and about 100 yards long reached Holidaysburg about 1/2 past 9 o'clock in the evening went to a public house & once more slept comfortably 4th The canal terminating here we took the cars over the Allegheny Mountains there were five inclined places each way, & the cars were drawn up by stationary engines, the inclined places were from 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles in length, the cars being delayed on the top of the mountain I visited a coal mine which are numerous in the neighborhood. the coal was drawn out by steam, our road today has been on the edge of precipices, and over ravines and over these mountains Canal Boats & their loads are taken, with ease, & deposited in the canal on the opposite side of the mountains we were led down the mountain by stationary engines on the western side, passed through a tunnel about a quarter of a mile in length, & reached Johnstown a rather dirty looking place in the evening, & found rather poor accomodations for the night.
