In case any of the chiefs apprehended danger from their enemies, they dispatched a messenger to the [Uku?] with a piece of tobacco painted red. On seeing it he immediately called the great warrior and his [suit?] and if they considered the state of the country safe, they did not smoke the tobacco, but sent it back by the same messenger who brought it; and on seeing the messenger with the tobacco in his hand, the fears of the people were removed, and they smoked their own tobacco in quietness.
