July, Friday, 3. 1863. Pretty brisk firing in the morning-some firing ceased & it was understood that a flag of truce appeared in front of Genl Smiths command and the day was spent in negotiation. Genl Grant & Pemberton met under a truce between the two armies. Ultimation sent at 10 P.M. Council of Genls was called. All but gun boat firing ceased Saturday 4 learned this morning that the rebs accepted the terms and that we will enter the town to day. White flags went up before ten. Called at [unclear] McPherson and afterward in company with llieut Rousen entered the town as the head of 2 Brigade.
