Louisville Oct 31st 1840 My dear Ann, I arrived here this morning between 11 and 12 o'clock A.M. We were detained by fog, was the consequence of our being so late, I think of having the "Lou", and taking passage on the S.B. "Maine" which is now in the Canal leaving for St. Louis, the "Lou" will not leave here before tomorrow, and probably not then. And since I have departed from Cincinnati, I feel very anxious to perform my voyage as fast as possible. __ Our passage thus far, has been very pleasant, considering it has been on a very slow "boat" But good humor and jokes accompanied us (which are very common on our Western Steamers,) If we [care to??] not keep up with some of the faster boats bound our way___ I merely drop these few lines to let you know that I arrived here in safety and in good heath, and fondly hope this may finds you in good health and enjoyment. I will write you again, as soon as I arrive at St. Louis. My love to you, and all the family___ From your Affectionate Husband "In haste", C. Gardner Pearce
