MEMORANDUM of March of the 1st Column from Camp on Fresh Fort of the Brazos.

September 20, 1874.

Broke camp at 6:15 A. M. , marched North and North East, halting at12 o'clock M. at water on the plains to graze the animals.

            At 2 o'clock and 30 minutes a scouting party, sent out the night previous, came in and reported that they had been attacked by a party of Indians, and the command started out at 3 P.M. and marched in the same direction until 5 oclock P.M. and Encamped for the night on one of the heads of the Big Wichita.

Distance marched thirty and one half miles.

Indians, who had made the attack but saw nothing of them. Scouting

              Broke camp at 7 o'clock A. M., marched some distance and halted for two hours on one of the tributaries of the Wichita, where "E" Comapny 4th Cavalry (Capt. Boehm) was sent out on a trail coming from the West. Capt. Boehm returned in a short time and reported that the trail was made by a hunting party and came from the North.  This march was made by the 2nd. Battalion and marched during the day twenty miles, Encamping on Pease River.  The 1st Battalion under Capt. McLaughlin followed the trail made by the Indians making the attack on the scouting party.
                Tuesday, Septbr. 22. 1874 remained in camp all day waiting the return of Capt. McLaughlin.  Nothing was heard of him during the day.  Rained all night the night before and at intervals during the day.
               Wednesday, Septbr. 23. 1874 broke Camp at 9 o'clock A. M. marched West and Northwest up Pease River, seven and one half miles, camping near the Fork of the Big hill on the Santa Fe trail
              Capt. McLaughlin came into about 6 oclock P. M., report of march enclosed.
              Thursday, Septbr. 24. 1874 remained in camp until 4 P.M., when the 2nd Battalion moved upon the plains.
               The Qr. Master was all day moving his train up the Big hill.  Distance marched three miles West by North.
               Friday, Septbr. 25., 1874 broke camp at 6 o'clock A. M. marched across the plains, West and West by North, about twenty miles to Tule canon, where the 1st Battalion went into camp and the 2nd. returned on the trail about five miles and went into camp; distance marched 25 miles.
