several times in passing through the city it is about as large as Albany it contains about [21?]1 thousand inhabitants and has but one common school with about 40 academics and seminaries there are some beautiful situations in this place and around it. there is several very pretty churches the new brick presbyterian church is the largest west of Albany it is an elegant building and handsomely situated. We stopped here about an hour I'll not have much chance to view the city but as I was riding through it we travelled on west through Whitesborough it is handsome village here I first saw a steam sawmill. There is here a seminary for young students who are desirous of engaging in the work of the ministry they are obliged to labour three hours in a day to defray the expenses of the school the students were working in their garden it was the most flourishing I have seen since I started my journey it has been kept here about two years last
