With regard to circumcision permit me to notice a sentence in Johns trechaeology p 172 "Not withstanding the high estimation in which the Hebrews held the rite of circumcision, those who, in the age of the unclear took a part in the gymnastic exercises of the Greeks, and of course appeared naked on such occasions, considered circumcision a discredit to them; and by an operation described in Celsus, and designated by the Greek verb epiphasmai, contrived to restore the purpose to its original form. This is probably refered to by it. And in Cor. 7:18. "Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised." Now, though the unclear lived long after the captivity of the ten tribes, yet those tribes when taken captive were apostates as really as those jews who afterwards yielded to unclear. And being dispersed among the unclear and Persians, with whom circumcision was probably as abhorrent as among the Greeks, they would be equally inclined to lay it aside. Yet it is said to be a fact that one family among the Creek Indians have ever observed the rite of circumcision. I have not been able to learn what family it is, but as it is said that the priesthood in that tribe is hereditary, confined to one family, it is probable that that family, if any, observe the above rite. This information, I first revived from a white man, who had lately returned from a journey to the Creek nation. where he was informed of the circumstance. I have since received the same information form a Cherokee who has no direct intercourse with white men. and would not, it is probably, receive any information on the subject through them. He says he received his information from Cherokees who saw these Creeks naked, and seeing the unclear entirely wanted said they supposed they were circumcised. This they express by the work unclear ni hu ste se lu hi which signifies cutting off the end. We have but little reason, therefore to unclear what circumcision is still practiced by some of the Creeks. And if so it is doubtless observed by other tribes whose history is not known to us.
