During that last winter Marion was in
the third grade of The Latin School, just around
the corner from us, on Division Street. She was
considered old enough to go back and forth by
herself while I as a beginner still in kindergarten,
had to be brought & called for by the nurse.
This arrangement permitted my sister to qualify
for the racy life of the shops around the
corner where you could get candy, chewing gum
and dill pickles and for the alleys of our area
where you went in the company of your peers
to enjoy them. I used to sit on the window
seat in the bay window with Mother, waiting
for Marion to turn the corner on her way home
to luncheon, trailing the glories of her double
life behind her.
One day she brought home a statuette
she had modelled in school. It represented
Montezuma who was the last Inca
of Peru, and he was standing up and his
cloak was flying in the wind, an effect
