121 [Notes in pencil written in left margin: Kennedy's 10/ [?] Polly legate Meullards Work 5/ ]

[Unclear title written in at top of page]

[?] Meullard "Barrister at Law in Texas" somehow or another in his return to Europe after a short residence in Texas - (among his other operations was received as a Barrister) This honor he boasts in all probability has found difficult to attain in his own country. He returns to Europe, writes his history of Texas, but not the History of the Country. The Old Spanish proverb of "[?] con [?] ondas, yo te dire qura dio' explains at least to any enquiry from the reasons he had in emanating his work under the patronage of the Mexican Govt. I mention here the subject of a communication by him against not very favorable to Texas, read to the Geograpical Society of London in 1840 - & by each to his mind the discipline that arose out of that production & the [?] very [?] personal report he made to bar M. by a member of the Society. If he has forgotten - this may bring it back to his recollection. I might fill pages in showing the untruths & [?] contained in his work, but refer 1st to what he says when speaking of Texas [?]. Mr. M. could never have been admitted into the Country of Texas ladies, or he would not accuse them of smoking pipes. That Mr. M. might have seen some gude auld wife, in the back woods whiffing at a corn cob piple I will not deny - Has Mr M ever travelled in Wales, or some parts of Yorkshire, to say nothing of auld Ireland
