1866. Thursday, January 4th. Baton Rouge La Spent the forenoon in the office doing business - Capt Ward A A quartered by the Martial. - At 2 PM made a speech to the Regiment of about an hour & a half advising them as to their future life. The Mayor Mr Elam was present & remarked to me that a man must be very blind not to see the future change in relations of the Blacks to the Whites. The 48th Regt mustered out to day. Pay Master has come Called & spent the evening with the Mayor Mr. Elam in company with Sumner He gave an account of a Lieut Todd of the U. S. A. how he seduced (probably) one of the ladies of the 1st circles
