Tobacco, or old tobacco so much used by the ancient Cherokees, was a weed growing in the woods, having a leaf shaped very much like that of Basswood. A powder was made of the leaves of this which they sprinkled on the fire when the sacrifice was burning.
Red paint was made by burning a soft red stone and then pounding it; and sometimes a kind of yellow dirt when burnt, became red. Red ointment was doubtless made by mixing one of the above ingredients with deers tallow.
