   It's Lincoln's Birthday, and we're out of school in Illinois by state law.  In Hammond, Indiana, the banks are open, stamps may be purchased, and the mail goes through.  I often think of and tell the students of Lincoln's failures, and I take occasion to stress the old-fashioned virtues of hard work, ambition, and industry as opposed to being gifted and creating a Madison Avenue image.  I fear that Abe would have a rough time on modern T.V.  Besides he wasn't a multi-millionaire, and campaigns are expensive.
