Washington April 27th 1858 Dear Sir, My affairs are now in such a state, that my presence is now no longer necessary here and to avoid further expense, I am desirous to leave the city as soon as it may be. I am now in a debt 70 Dollars for my board and not a Dollar in hand to answer this demand. If you have recovered the sum mentioned in your Letter, may I ask you to send the same to Josiah F. Polk Esq. of this city. You did not mentioned the sum or the Bank where the check may be presented. You have I presumed, apprised? the Bank of its failure in reaching me — to prevent fraud! The committee of the house have reported & printed wherein the Secretary of the treasurer is authorized to pay to the Rev. Eleazer Williams the sum of fourteen thousand dollars for services rendered &c. and that the name of said Eleazer Williams be placed upon the pension list as of the date May first 1856, and that he be entitled to receive, during his natural life, the yearly pension of two hundred & nineteen Dollars. There is a movement & actually in operation in the Indian Committee, which greatly excites my feelings — & in which I am deeply interested — we are soon to be called upon to relinquishe our rights to the land in the Indian Territory, west of Missouri.
